Born into the Italian aristocracy, Giovanni studied under Pablo Picasso. This influence in combination with his love of Sicilian culture is highly evident in his work, which ranges from figural to abstract. Ceramics made at Giovanni's studio,, are normally decorated in bright colors usually on a white base glaze.

Giovanni left his legacy in the creative hands of his daughters, Rosita, Susanna, and Margherita, who created works inspired their father. Ceramica de Simone sold their wares online up until their website closed in 2006.
