John Frank
(1905-1973)
Shortly after John Frank graduated in 1927 from the Chicago Art Institute, he was hired by the University of Oklahoma to establish the school's first Ceramic Art Department. During his tenure at the university, he established Frank Potteries to manufacture his own commercial wares.
In 1938, John and his wife Grace Lee moved to Sapulpa, OK, where with the help of his Grace Lee's father, a carpenter, they built a new studio. Just a few short months later the facility and master molds were destroyed by fire, but John and Grace-Lee rebuilt the business as Frankoma, which went on to fulfill their goal of providing dinnerware and fine art pottery even the most modest budgets could afford.
John Frank's vision continues today, even after his death in 1975. Frankoma, Inc., under new ownership since the early 1990's, continues to produce pottery wares in John's style.
