I have a healthy fascination with the letterpress. I also have a healthy fascination with found images. Ophelia Chong takes these two things and combines them to make beautiful artwork with a stoic modernist aesthetic. Her Red + Green series is very "German" in mood, reminiscent of Bauhaus typography and photomontage. Wonderful stuff.
Scott commented: Thanks Craig! My undergraduate degree is in printmaking, and I've often wanted to rekindle that craft for myself. I've been tempted to buy a letterpress several times in recent years, but I think I'd need a studio space before doing so. Apparently there are just some new places coming available for artist rentals here in town. I might need to look into that.
craig commented: I love letterpress as well - I used to have a small Pilot letterpress that I printed small art books and cards etc. on. THere is a dealer here in Indy who has an unbelievable warehouse of letterpres machines and parts - "The largest and best domestic source for presses, parts and other letterpress equipment is Dave Churchman in Indianapolis, whose legendary warehouse (known to its regulars as the Boutique de Junque when not being referred to as Letterpress Heaven West) is a cross between Ali Baba's Cave and the Gutenberg Museum" - if you google him you can find info...
