Red + Green

I have a healthy fascination with the letterpress. I also have a healthy fascination with found images. Ophelia Chong takes these two things and combines them to make beautiful artwork with a stoic modernist aesthetic. Her Red + Green series is very "German" in mood, reminiscent of Bauhaus typography and photomontage. Wonderful stuff.

craig commented: I love letterpress as well - I used to have a small Pilot letterpress that I printed small art books and cards etc. on. THere is a dealer here in Indy who has an unbelievable warehouse of letterpres machines and parts - "The largest and best domestic source for presses, parts and other letterpress equipment is Dave Churchman in Indianapolis, whose legendary warehouse (known to its regulars as the Boutique de Junque when not being referred to as Letterpress Heaven West) is a cross between Ali Baba's Cave and the Gutenberg Museum" - if you google him you can find info...

Scott commented: Thanks Craig! My undergraduate degree is in printmaking, and I've often wanted to rekindle that craft for myself. I've been tempted to buy a letterpress several times in recent years, but I think I'd need a studio space before doing so. Apparently there are just some new places coming available for artist rentals here in town. I might need to look into that.

About the Archives ...

These news archives span back to Ars Longa's inception in August of 2004. Due to this longevity, many of the older posts may feature external links that have gone dead. Over time websites move pages and some even close shop altogether. I apologize for these inconsistencies, but in the interest in maintaining a full archive even entries whose links have expired will remain in place on Ars Longa.
