Shortly after Kate and I moved to Champaign, we started going to some of the local art fairs as a social activity. In addition to simply getting us out of the house, one fair in particular introduced us to the work of Scott Westgard. In strolling down the lanes of handmade pottery, found object jewelry, and assorted craft items, we both intuitively stopped in front of a booth with dozens of miniature etchings and aquatints. We instantly fell in love with one tiny piece called Crows at Dawn and purchased it right away. Westgard's work ranges from jokey surrealism to a brooding ominous dreamscape, and his use of the mezzotint process creates stunning imagery. So stunning, in fact, several weeks ago I mentioned to Kate that we might want to consider buying another piece or two. Completely unbeknownst to me, she had already been in contact with the artist and had purchased a piece called Light in the Darkness as my Christmas present this year. She's the best wife ever!
