The Devolution of Dinnerware06.27.08
This is one reason why postmodernism sucks. You all know the old design adage that "form follows function." It is a useful — albeit more and more cliché — saying that designers often follow. But with postmodern design we often see both form and function give way to concept. And the concept usually is only interesting for about five seconds before you start actually considering ... well ... how the object looks and how well it addresses its intended purpose. Not to rally too hard against Kathryn Hinton's work. I'm sure she's a nice person, and she's obviously clever. And remember that Ms. Hinton isn't the first designer to work in this mode, and I'm sure she won't be the last. I'm just growing weary of design turning into schtick. It happens all too often today and it needs to stop. Soon.

Scott said: I'm glad you agree, Brad. So many people like this silly conceptual stuff. In hindsight I thought my rant might ruffle some feathers, which definitely was not my intention.
