If you happen to be in Finland, I'm begging you to head to the Espoo Museum of Modern art to catch their current exhibition of sculptures by Tapio Wirkkala. Tapio Wirkkala - Sculptor runs through January 1, and covers his sculptural legacy with an emphasis on his plywood pieces from the 1950s an onward. We've only very briefly touched on some stainless steel flatware designs by this Finnish master previously on Ars Longa, so this is a great opportunity to get better acquainted with Wirkkala's fine art in addition to his work in industrial design.
Scott commented: I'd quite like to see this exhibition as well, Christina. I'm sure Wirkkala's sculpture would even be more stunning in person than it is in the photos (which are wonderful!).
robert devine commented: Hi Scott,
WOW that looks like a fantastic exhibition in pressed plywood no less!!
Scott did you know that the finest hand turner craftsmen of wood art actually lived in our area? Harry Nohr (1896-1976) a Mineral Point WI native I know that i'am somewhat OK very biased having searched for his Heritage bowls for years however he was prominately featured right between Wharton Esherick and Wendall Castle in the 1970 OBJECTS USA expo financed by Sam Johnson of Johnson Wax fame if he had turned his attention to the fame mongering of the few before him and many since his name would have been right up there with Prestini however he prefered the quiet solitude of the hilly s.w. wisconsin landscape to the bright lights and dollar bills of NYC kind of neat!! best, robert
Scott commented: Wow, thanks Robert! I think I need to look more into Harry Nohr's work. I'm not familiar with him, but my brief perusal of his work on Google looked incredible!
Christina @ Pardon my Vintage commented: Just saw a tweet about this earlier today! I'd *really* love to see this in person, but I'll have to settle for the press photos ... :-)
