Scandinavia or Bust in 2010

The craftsmanship of true Scandinavian Modern furniture is one of the things that really makes it appeal to me. My tastes are in constant evolution, and 2009 looks like it might be a turning point in my collecting from concentrating on American to Danish. I've always been attracted by Scandinavian forms (it's my heritage after all), but it wasn't until I fell in love with Hans Wegner's J16 rocking chair and purchased two of them that I really started to understand what these Scandinavian designers were getting at. This short video showing the craftsmen at PP Mobler building Wegner's Peacock Chair is a perfect example of the artistry behind the design, and makes me more than ever want to find more pieces by the many great Scandinavian Modernist designers. And while I'm looking for Danish Modern furniture, what will you be searching for in 2010?

Antay commented: A midmod house! (Assuming, of course, that I can unload my loft in this economy...)

Dawn commented: Hi Scott, Happy New Year! Like you, my tastes are in constant evolution and 2009 was a turning point for me. I made a decision to buy only what I love and can't live without; these mid-century objects must fit in with my design "plan" and represent quality over quantity. My last few purchases of 2009 show this: the Jere gulls sculpture, the Thonet rocker, the Heller Massimo Max II mugs. Everything has to flow with everything else; there must be harmony, quality, and great design. By purchasing/"recusing" secondhand, mid-century goods I will, in my own humble way, in my own humble home, pay homage to great design, be green, and be happy

Scott commented: Happy New Year to you, too, Dawn! I love the juxtaposition of good design & responsible reuse. It's something we've discussed before, but I really do believe it is a path towards a cleaner and more beautiful world.
